Kimiyoshi Ichida

President, Japanese Society of Gout and Uric & Nucleic Acids

I am Kimiyoshi Ichida of the JR East Chiba Health Promotion Center, and as of February 2025, I have assumed the role of President of the Japanese Society of Gout and Uric & Nucleic Acids. Our Society originated in 1977 as the Uric Acid Research Group and has since developed into an academic society dedicated to the study of gout as well as metabolic disorders related to uric acid and nucleic acids.

I have been a member of this Society since 1984. Under the advisement of many distinguished members, I learned the fundamentals of both research and clinical practice of gout and purine metabolism. I am deeply honored to now serve as President of this long-established Society, and I am committed to giving back to the community that has greatly contributed to my professional growth. Drawing on my experiences working under the leadership of former presidents, Dr. Kiyoko Kaneko and Dr. Ichiro Hisatome, I will do my utmost to serve the Society.

Our members have made important contributions to global research in this field, including studies on enzymes and transporters. A notable example in the clinical area is the revision of the Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Hyperuricemia and Gout, now in preparation for its fourth edition. I take great pride in the Society’s achievements in both uric acid and purine related research and professional education for healthcare providers.

However, public awareness and education regarding gout and hyperuricemia remain insufficient. Looking ahead, I intend to place greater emphasis on outreach and education for the general public.
